Dr. Carolan received his undergraduate degree in pharmacy from the University of Illinois College of Pharmacy and his medical degree from the University of Illinois College of Medicine.  He completed his internship at Presbyterian-St. Luke’s Hospital in Chicago, Illinois and his ophthalmology residency at the University of Colorado Medical Center in Denver, Colorado.  He served in the United States Navy as a Flight Surgeon before he started a private ophthalmology practice in Laramie, Wyoming.

Dr. Carolan joined the Eye Institute of Southern Arizona in 1994 and is Board Certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology.  He is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, and the American Medical Association.  He and his wife Peggy have two grown daughters. He enjoys golfing, traveling and cooking
